Director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research since 2004, Director emeritus since 2019 and Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Basel since 2005.

Susan Gasser studied biology and biophysics at the University of Chicago and completed her PhD at the University of Basel. She joined the EPFL's Swiss Institute for Experimental Research in Cancer (ISREC) as a group leader in 1986 and held a professorship at the University of Geneva from 2001 to 2004. In November 2004, she became Director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI), and since 2005, she has also been Full Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Basel. Since March 2019 she is Director emeritus and Group Leader at the FMI. Susan Gasser is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, of the Crick Institute in London and of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. She is President of the Equality Commission of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
