Susan Gasser studied biology and biophysics at the University of Chicago and completed her PhD at the University of Basel. She joined the EPFL's Swiss Institute for Experimental Research in Cancer (ISREC) as a group leader in 1986 and held a professorship at the University of Geneva from 2001 to 2004. At the end of 2004, she was appointed Director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, and since 2005, she has also been Full Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Basel. Susan Gasser is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. She is President of the Equality Commission of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
